In the United States, we collect federal taxes based on the “honor system”. In other words, our taxpayers file their returns themselves, and the rest of society relies on the honesty of their work. Of course, whenever people are involved, there will always be the temptation to “fudge” or stretch the truth while filling out their returns. This is why we need a well-funded IRS.
